Wisdom teeth were once essential for breaking down foods. Today, our diets have eliminated the need for our third molars, and many people do not have enough room in their jaw for their wisdom teeth to erupt without damaging neighboring teeth or affecting their alignment.
Most people recover within seven to ten days of their wisdom teeth extraction. However, severe symptoms can occur after the procedure. Let’s look at typical and severe symptoms following wisdom teeth extraction and the steps you can take to avoid complications.
Is It Normal To Have A Fever Right After Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Many people have a low-grade fever after their wisdom teeth are removed. Taking over-the-counter pain medications is an effective way to manage your fever. In most cases, the post-surgery fever subsides in a few days without further complications.
You should see your dentist if your fever is over 100.4 degrees F. A moderate or high-grade fever could indicate a post-wisdom tooth removal infection.
Can You Get Sepsis From Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Although infections are rare, it is possible to develop an infection after removing your wisdom teeth. In severe cases, it’s possible to develop sepsis if the infection spreads to your bloodstream.
Treatment for wisdom tooth infections includes antibiotics. Your dentist can clean your mouth, focusing on the extraction sites and surrounding gums and teeth.
There’s no need to wait until they become a problem individually. Take advantage of our limited time offer and get all four wisdom teeth removed at once, under sedation for only $1,299.
How Do You Know If Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction Site Is Infected?
Common symptoms of an infection after a wisdom tooth extraction include the following:
Bad breath
Bad taste in the mouth
Bleeding
Discharge from the extraction site
High fever
Pain
Swelling
Since other issues can cause these symptoms, there are some significant symptoms you should look for to determine if you have an infection. A key symptom is a white or yellow discharge from the extraction site. You should also note if your pain or swelling subsided and then returned or worsened. You should see your dentist as soon as possible if you suspect you have an infection.
You can help prevent infection by avoiding behaviors that increase the risk of post-extraction complications, such as smoking and consuming hard foods. A salt water rinse is an effective way to keep the extraction site clean, but you should wait until 24 hours after the procedure to reduce the risk of dry sockets.

If you do not see your dental insurance listed here, just give us a call to confirm!
It’s normal to experience some swelling after your wisdom tooth extraction. Still, there are steps you can take to minimize the swelling. Your dentist will recommend appropriate soft foods you can eat during recovery. Eating hard foods increases the risk of dry sockets, and spicy food can cause more swelling. Safe soft food options include the following:
Applesauce
Eggs
Mashed potatoes
Oatmeal
Pudding
Smoothies
Soup
Yogurt
You should avoid using straws for at least 48 to 72 hours after your wisdom teeth extraction to reduce the chances of dry sockets, which can cause swelling.
Other ways to manage swelling during recovery after wisdom teeth extraction include applying ice packs to your face and resting. You must limit your activities to avoid any complications.
Your dentist will explain which pain medications you can use during your recovery, such as over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, which help prevent swelling.
Booking Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Absolute Dental provides special offers that make essential dental care affordable for all. You can schedule a complete exam with X-rays to confirm if your wisdom teeth are starting to come in. The X-rays reveal if you have impacted wisdom teeth or tooth damage.
During your appointment, your dentist will explain other special offers we have to cover the cost of your wisdom teeth extraction. They can also provide information about our Smile Saver dental plan, which includes routine services like dental exams. With the Smile Saver plan, you’ll also benefit from discounts on other routine and essential services, including X-rays, cleanings, and tooth extractions.
