What Types Of Sedation Do You Offer For Kids?

Absolute Dental offers several types of sedation, ranging from mild to full general anesthesia.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide induces feelings of deep relaxation and happiness. After breathing in the gas through a mask, this sedative keeps patients comfortable while still conscious and responsive. The mild effects wear off within 10 minutes, allowing children to return to their routines quickly.

Oral Sedation

We also provide sedation by oral pill, which children ingest about 30 minutes before their dental procedures. While these sedatives do not completely put patients to sleep, they do feel very calm while awake. This is important if the dentist needs your child to respond to instructions or questions. Under this option, it can take 12 to 24 hours for the sedation to completely wear off.

General Anesthesia

Intravenous (IV) general anesthesia provides a deep level of sedation that’s useful for lengthy treatments, patients with severe dental anxiety, or invasive procedures that can be difficult for young children. Your child is typically unaware of what is happening while undergoing dental work. However, the anesthesia has lasting effects that can take about 24 hours to wear off.
