The Teeth Whitening Process at Absolute Dental in Las Vegas
In-office whitening services combine a hydrogen peroxide gel with an activation process that actually enhances the speed and effectiveness of the whitening process. From start to finish, the average teeth whitening procedure can last anywhere from 60 minutes to 2 hours.
Step 1:
First, your dentist will choose the appropriate whitening method and the correct level of hydrogen peroxide intensity for your teeth. This varies based on the level of discoloration that has occurred.
Step 2:
With the measured level of hydrogen peroxide, the dental whitening gel is applied to the teeth. The gel is then left on for a predetermined amount of time to allow it to effectively activate and whiten your teeth.
Step 3:
After the gel is removed, the patient rinses away any residue so the immediate post-treatment shade can be measured. This is compared to the pre-treatment shade of your teeth to determine the success of the procedure. Some patients experience an improvement of three to eight shades after just one whitening treatment!

Three Important Misconceptions About Teeth Whitening
As with any popular procedure, there are a number of misconceptions that sometimes scare consumers away from the whitening process. Among the misconceptions currently making the rounds, three stand out as the easiest to disprove.
1. Whitening Will Bleach the Whole Mouth
There is a common perception that a whitening procedure will also bleach veneers, fillings, crowns, and other dental work. This is not true. Only the actual teeth will be whitened and all other dental work will remain the same color that it was before the procedure.
2. The Chemicals Used are Dangerous
The primary chemical used in teeth whitening is carbamide peroxide, which breaks down in the mouth to become hydrogen peroxide during whitening. This is not an abrasive or toxic chemical or dangerous to patients.
3. Whitened Teeth Will Be White Forever
Even the most professional services can’t compensate for the yellowing of teeth in the future. With careful maintenance and an understanding of what causes tooth staining, though, the whitening effect will last longer.
If you expose your teeth to foods, beverages or use tobacco products, you may begin to see your whitening treatment fade after 1 or 2 months. On average, a teeth whitening treatment is designed to last about 12 months.
Teeth whitening products typically contain 10% carbamide peroxide, a disinfectant and also an ear wax removal agent. The ADA has approved it to be safe for dental use. However, in some patients, carbamide peroxide has been known to cause dentin sensitivity and gingival irritation which can be problematic. Consult with a dentist before starting a teeth whiteneing treatment to ensure you are a good candidate.
Is Teeth Whitening Right For Me?
Whether it’s to combat years of coffee drinking or the damaging effects of cigarette smoking and soda consumption, the teeth whitening process is a perfect solution for all types of patients. In the end, the result will be a healthier smile and a greater feeling of self-confidence, and no one can argue with those results.
