What Is a Dental Sealant?

Pediatric dentists use dental sealants to help fortify a child’s molars by providing a hard layer of protection. It is a thin coating of resin that is brushed over the grooves of the molars to prevent food particles from becoming lodged in the teeth and bacteria from growing. Dental sealant treatment is non-invasive and painless, making it ideal for young patients.

Our experienced Carson City pediatric dentists use dental sealants as a preventative treatment to reduce tooth decay and cavities. According to the American Dental Association (ADA)1 studies have shown that dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities in children by about 80%!

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are designed to cover the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars to seal out food particles and germs that can lead to tooth decay. While effectively preventing cavities, you’ll also find these benefits with dental sealants:

  • The procedure is painless and non-invasive
  • All molars are done quickly in one visit
  • Saves in future dental expenses and treatments
  • Proven to be safe by the ADA
  • Helps your kids keep up with good oral hygiene

Made using BPA-free and non-hazardous materials, modern dental sealants have very little downsides other than a minimal chance of chipping. Parents can expect a slow thinning of the dental sealant after a few years from normal wear and tear, but they are very easily repaired or replaced.

The Process of Applying Dental Sealants

Applying dental sealants is a fast and painless procedure in our Carson City Absolute Dental offices. The process does not require any drilling or numbing! What you can expect is a quick and easy process, including these steps:

  1. The dentist will clean your child’s molars with a polishing brush and gritty toothpaste, removing plaque and germs.
  2. The teeth are allowed to dry while a small cotton roll or cheek shield is applied between the molars, tongue and cheeks to keep saliva away from the teeth.
  3. The dentist applies an etching solution to disinfect and prep the tooth, which ensures the sealant successfully adheres to the tooth’s surface.
  4. The dentist rinses off the etching solution, and the teeth are dried completely.
  5. A thin bonding agent is brushed on the teeth. Then, the sealant is quickly applied directly to the enamel on the surface of the molars.
  6. An LED blue light is used to harden the sealant and bond to the tooth’s surface in minutes.

Once your Carson City dentist confirms your child’s dental sealants have completely hardened, the procedure is complete! Patients can immediately resume their daily routines with no restrictions.

FAQs About Dental Sealants

Similar to composite material in dental fillings, dental sealants are made with a medical-grade resin. However, the consistency of the resin is slightly different. Dental sealant resin is more liquid, which allows the material to completely fill the grooves and crevices of a child’s molar before hardening.

Patients have no restriction or side effects after dental sealant treatment. Children are allowed to eat and drink right away and can return to school immediately.

Typically, dental sealants will last between 3 to 5 years. However, they may last for up to 10 years for some patients! Parents can expect dental sealants to start to wear down after a few years before needing to be replaced.

Most pediatric dentists recommend that children get dental sealants soon after their permanent molars have grown. The sealants provide an extra layer of protection that helps your child avoid tooth decay and invasive treatments in the future.

Most insurance companies will cover a portion or all of the dental sealant cost because it is considered a preventative treatment. But it depends on your insurance policy and coverage for your kids. Ask your insurance provider if your kid’s dental sealants are covered and, if so, how much of the total cost they pay.
