Types Of Braces For Underbites And Overbites
Your dentist may recommend one of these orthodontic options for your bite issue:
- Metal braces
- Ceramic or clear braces
- Lingual braces
- Clear aligners or invisible braces
Traditional metal or ceramic braces are typically the best choice for people with any level of malocclusion. However, clear aligners may also be a solution for mild to moderate overbites and underbites. If you want a more discreet treatment option but are not a good candidate for clear aligners, you can ask your dentist about lingual braces.
Orthodontic Treatment Process
Dental braces apply continual pressure to the teeth during treatment to gently shift your smile and align the jaw.
With metal or ceramic braces, brackets are attached to each tooth, and an archwire passes through each one. Your orthodontist will periodically tighten and adjust the archwire to achieve optimal results.
If you use clear aligners to treat your underbite or overbite, you will wear a series of plastic alignment trays that progressively guide your teeth and jaw into alignment. You will need to wear these aligners for at least 22 hours a day during treatment.
Treatment Duration
Treatment times will vary based on the severity of the malocclusion and whether other procedures are necessary prior to installing the braces. When treatment is complete, you’ll have a beautifully straight smile and a better-functioning jaw.
