Orthodontic appliances refer to the items used to help straighten teeth and reposition the jaw to give you a beautiful smile. The most common orthodontic appliances people know about are braces and clear aligners. However, other types of orthodontic appliances are used in pediatric dentistry to help correct minor issues before braces are needed. We’ll cover those in detail later on.

Removable orthodontic and dental appliances should be cleaned regularly to remove bacteria and plaque. The exact cleaning process depends on the specific appliance, but generally, you should remove the appliance, rinse it in cold water, and use a soft toothbrush to clean it. 

Certain appliances may also be able to be cleaned with liquid soap or toothpaste. However, you should check with your orthodontist first to find the proper cleaning method. 

Functional dental appliances use the natural growth and movement of the jaw and muscle to help align teeth and jaws. They can be permanent, like braces, or removable, like a retainer.
