You help to remind your children to brush and floss their teeth for proper oral hygiene. You also bring them to Absolute Dental for bi-annual checkups and cleanings. These are all vital steps for keeping your kid’s teeth and gums healthy and cavity-free. However, another important pediatric dentistry service that is beneficial is fluoride treatments for kids.
Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay. Flouride treatments strengthen teeth, reduce the risks of cavities, and improve overall oral hygiene. They are recommended from the time children get their first set of baby teeth until they are in their teens and have all of their permanent teeth.
Why Are Fluoride Treatments Important?
Flouride treatments at a dentist are important because they provide added protection over the outer enamel layer of teeth to prevent tooth decay. They are an essential part of proper dental hygiene in Las Vegas. When we drink and eat, the bacteria in our mouths break down food particles. The bacteria are attracted to starches and sugar left on the teeth.
As the bacteria break down starches and sugar, they release acids that can destroy the enamel layer and lead to cavities. The acids also leach out minerals (demineralization) found in the enamel layer. Fluoride treatments provide several benefits, including:
Resources lost minerals by remineralizing the tooth enamel
Slows down the demineralization
Reverses early-stage tooth decay
Strengthens the enamel layer to protect it from cavity-causing acids

Are Fluoride Treatments Safe?
Flouride treatments are safe for kids of all ages. Depending on your city’s drinking water, they may be drinking fluoridated water. However, the amount of fluoride in the drinking water is not always sufficient to provide the protection your child’s teeth require. Our pediatric dentists can discuss your child’s fluoride needs and help to determine when fluoride treatments are necessary.
How Do Fluoride Treatments Work?
There are a few different ways fluoride treatments are applied at Absolute Dental. One option is where a fluoride gel or foam is put inside a tray your child will bite down on and hold in their mouth for a set period. Another option is to paint a fluoride varnish onto your child’s teeth. We find this method is easier for younger children and only requires a few minutes to complete. As the fluoride varnish comes into contact with saliva, it hardens almost instantly.

According to Stanford Children’s Health, children should have some form of fluoride daily from the time they are six months to 16 years old. This can be fluoridated tap water, fluoride drops, and fluoride treatments.
Flouride treatments at Absolute Dental are recommended in the following situations:
Your child does not brush twice a day
Your child does not floss daily
Your child is not receiving sufficient fluoride from other sources
Your tap water is not fluoridated
Your child only drinks bottled water
Your child has already had issues with tooth decay and cavities
The cost of fluoride treatments can range from $20 to $50, depending on the dental office supplying the treatment. Your cost will also vary depending on if you have dental insurance. At Absolute Dental, if you are a member of our Smile Saver program, you can save between 30 and 50% off the cost.
How often fluoride treatments are required depends on your child’s oral health. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should have fluoride treatments every three to six months. Some children may only require fluoride treatments every six months at their bi-annual cleanings and checkups. Other children who are at high risk of tooth decay and cavities may require fluoride treatments every three months.
If your child has traditional braces, where the brackets and wires can cover teeth and create a barrier to proper cleaning, fluoride treatments are highly recommended. The added protection during orthodontic treatment reduces the risk of tooth decay and cavities.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, adults can benefit from fluoride treatments in the following situations:
You have periodontal (gum) disease: As the gums recede, they expose more of the tooth surface, leaving it at risk of tooth decay and cavities.
You have dry mouth: Dry mouth makes it more difficult for saliva to wash away bacteria from the teeth when eating and drinking.
You have poor dental hygiene habits: If you do not brush twice a day and floss daily, fluoride treatments are beneficial.
You have dental prosthesis appliances: If you have implants, bridges, partial plates, crowns, or veneers, you can have an increased risk of dental decay and cavities in your natural teeth.
Our Las Vegas general dentists, pediatric dentists, and orthodontic dentists can all administer fluoride treatments for children and adults. Your fluoride treatment may also be performed by one of our licensed dental hygienists.
