What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth occur when the molars are stuck in the gums or jawbone and may or may not have grown through the gum tissue. The two types of impacted wisdom teeth are partially and fully impacted.

Partially impacted teeth are where the wisdom teeth are partially visible through the gum tissue but have not fully erupted through the gum tissue. Fully impacted teeth are when they are still completely hidden beneath the gum tissue and are not visible. 

Are There Different Types Of Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

There are different types of impacted wisdom teeth. The type depends on the position of the tooth and the direction it is facing, as follows:

  • Horizontal impacted wisdom teeth: These teeth are developing on their side underneath the gum tissue. They often grow toward the other back molars, damaging the other teeth. They also place pressure on the teeth and jaw, leading to pain and discomfort.
  • Mesial impacted wisdom teeth: This is the most common impaction type. It is where the wisdom teeth are growing at an angle rather than vertically. Mesially impacted wisdom teeth can cause some pain as they press on the back molars, damaging these teeth as well.
  • Vertically impacted wisdom teeth: A vertically impacted wisdom tooth grows in the correct direction but is trapped under the gum tissue. 
  • Distal impacted wisdom teeth: This condition is when the teeth point backward and develop in the wrong direction. They are very rare but can be problematic if not extracted.

Wisdom teeth usually develop in the late teens to early twenties, but they can start sooner. Some teens first get their wisdom teeth when they are 13 or 14. Since wisdom teeth develop at any time during this period, maintaining regular dental checkups is essential to identify impacted wisdom teeth before they cause problems.
