Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Excellent dental healthcare practices are encouraged when children receive their first baby tooth. Adult teeth begin to arrive by the age of 7, and from that age, children understand if they lose a permanent tooth, they won’t grow another. That’s why many people think about the importance of keeping their teeth and find it surprising they may need to remove the last permanent teeth that arrive.
Wisdom tooth extraction is so common that five million Americans have one or more wisdom teeth removed each year. You may need to schedule your wisdom teeth removal if they’re causing health issues. Our dentists in Las Vegas can confirm if your wisdom teeth are impacted, explain the reasons for wisdom tooth extraction, and provide tips to ensure prompt recovery after removing them.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Your wisdom teeth are your third molars. They come in at the back of your mouth, beside your second molars. Molars are strong teeth that break down food so you can eat safely. Your third molars typically arrive by the time you’re 21, although your wisdom teeth can arrive in your late teens.
Can I Keep My Wisdom Teeth?
Since molars help with chewing and breaking down food, it may be surprising that most people have their third molars removed. Our ancestors needed their third molars to break down harder foods before dietary changes eventually eliminated the need for wisdom teeth.
Most people do not have enough room in their mouths for their wisdom teeth, and their third molars become impacted. This means the wisdom teeth can erupt through the gums because of the lack of space. In some cases, the tooth twists or pushes neighboring teeth out of place, causing issues with teeth alignment.
You may also need your wisdom teeth removed if you have cysts on these teeth or if they cause an infection.
Up to 37% of people never grow all four wisdom teeth, and some never grow any. You won’t have to worry about surgery if you never develop wisdom teeth. You may also be one of the people who has enough room for wisdom teeth and does not need to have them removed. However, if your wisdom teeth are impacted and cause health issues, you must have them removed.

How Can I Pay For My Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Your dentist can use a dental exam and X-rays to confirm whether your wisdom teeth are coming in and whether you have enough room for them to erupt without damaging neighboring teeth. Absolute Dental has a Smile Saver plan for patients without dental insurance. The plan includes the cost of dental exams. It offers significant discounts on other dental services, such as X-rays and teeth cleanings.
Absolute Dental also offers discounts on wisdom teeth removals with sedation. Our custom dental health plan and regular discounts make it possible to afford the dental health care you need.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction FAQs
It’s common to experience swelling and reduced jaw mobility for a few days after surgery to remove your wisdom teeth. You may need up to five days off work or school, although some people can resume routine activities after a few days.
The recovery period after wisdom teeth removal can last up to 14 days. However, some people fully recover within a week to ten days. Complications can affect your recovery time after your wisdom teeth removal, which is why it’s crucial to follow your dentist’s instructions to prevent dry sockets or infections.
The most painful day after your wisdom teeth extraction is typically two or three days following the procedure. You’ll experience the most swelling between 48 and 72 hours after your surgery, which coincides with the greatest amount of pain. Your dentist will explain your options for managing your pain after the extraction, including taking over-the-counter painkillers. You may experience more significant pain after this if you have complications, such as dry sockets.
Some blood clots are crucial for your well-being, while others risk your health. Your blood forms clots after an injury to stop the bleeding. This is a crucial part of your recovery process. Your body also produces blood clots after surgical procedures, such as wisdom teeth extractions, to protect your blood, bones, and nerves from damage or infection.
The blood clots covering the wisdom teeth extraction sites can be detached from the extraction sites or dissolve, causing a dry socket. When this occurs, your bones and nerves have no protection. Symptoms of dry socket include the following:
- A bad taste in your mouth
- Bad breath
- Pain affecting your mouth or face
In severe cases, dry sockets can cause infections. A dry socket remains a risk until you fully heal from your wisdom tooth extraction.
