What Is Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal is a dental procedure that treats a severely inflamed, infected, or damaged tooth. When the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth are exposed to bacteria, they can become infected or diseased, causing a tooth abscess, throbbing pain, swelling, and an increased risk of other health issues.
Common causes of a tooth infection that require a root canal procedure include:
- Advanced tooth decay
- A cracked or broken tooth
- An injury that exposes the nerves
- Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
Root canal treatment saves the tooth by clearing the infection and disinfecting the inside of the tooth. A skilled dentist or endodontist removes the infected tissue and blood vessels, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals the tooth with a dental filling and crown.

Understanding the Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is the most effective way to save an infected tooth when the damage has progressed to the pulp and nerves. Because there are root canal myths that can make patients hesitant to move forward with the procedure, it’s essential to understand the treatment.
While every patient is unique and may have varying needs, here are the general steps of a root canal procedure in our northern Las Vegas offices.
Initial Exam and Diagnosis
First, our team will work quickly to diagnose the issue and determine if a root canal is the right treatment. This will involve an exam of your mouth and possible X-rays of the area. We will also ask about your symptoms, and what may have led to the issue.
Administering Anesthesia or Sedative
We ensure our patients are comfortable and relaxed during a root canal treatment, allowing our dentists to work quickly and effectively. For some, we can administer a local dental anesthetic to numb the area. However, dental sedation is also available for patients who need additional pain relief, or suffer from anxiety.
Preparing the Area
Next, we’ll prep the area of your mouth where we’ll be working. This involves applying a dental dam over the infected tooth to keep it dry throughout the process. We’ll also check that you are comfortable and ready for the next step before starting.
Opening the Tooth
Using special dental tools, we will drill a small hole into the top of your tooth to expose the pulp and nerves inside. Because you are numb or sedated, you will not feel any pain during this part of the procedure.
Clearing the Infection
To clear the infection, our team carefully removes the dental pulp, tissue, nerves, and blood vessels from inside the tooth. Then, we use special tools and an antibiotic rinse to disinfect the root canal and pulp chamber, ensuring all bacteria are removed completely.
Filling and Sealing the Tooth
The inside of the tooth and root canals are filled with a special material to prevent anything from entering the space. Gutta-percha is typically used because it’s antimicrobial, biocompatible, and easy to shape. A sealer material fills the rest of the space and closes the tooth.
Placing a Dental Crown
The last step of the procedure is to cap the tooth with a natural-looking dental crown. You will likely wear a temporary crown while a permanent replacement is made in the dental lab. After a few weeks, you will return to our office to place the final crown and complete the treatment.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
If you suspect you have a tooth infection, here are common symptoms and signs that you may need root canal treatment:
- Sharp or throbbing pain: An infection often causes throbbing pain and tenderness in and around the tooth. This pain can worsen and become unmanageable with over-the-counter medication.
- Temperature sensitivity: It’s common to experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures when a tooth is infected.
- Pressure: Inflammation inside and around the tooth roots can create a feeling of pressure in your gums and jaw.
- Swelling: Swollen gums, jaw, or face can be another symptom of a tooth infection that is causing inflammation.
- Gums abscess or boil: A gum boil can develop around the infected tooth that oozes foul-smelling puss.
- Tooth discoloration: An infected tooth may also become discolored, giving it a gray or blackish appearance.
- Loosened tooth: When an abscess forms at the root of an infected tooth, it can kill the nerves or damage the jawbone, loosening the tooth.
It’s vital that you seek dental care right away for these symptoms. Timely treatment is key to saving your tooth and restoring your dental health.
Don’t wait until the pain gets worse. Reach out to our northern Nevada dental team for your root canal consultation today.
Aftercare and Recovery From Root Canal Treatment
It’s normal to experience some discomfort and swelling after a root canal procedure. You will likely have sensitivity and tenderness for several days after treatment. This will subside with time and the right care.
Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotics and pain medication to help you manage symptoms and support the healing process. However, over-the-counter painkillers are often enough to keep you comfortable.
Follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions carefully, including:
- Avoid eating and drinking immediately after the procedure
- Apply a cold compress to help with pain and swelling
- Gently brushing and flossing around the tooth
- Eating soft foods for the first few days
- Rinsing with warm salt water to reduce inflammation
- Stay rested and hydrated while you heal

FAQ
Most people will recover in less than one week after the root canal procedure. However, some patients will need more time to fully heal if there are underlying conditions, or the procedure was particularly complex.
As with any dental procedure, there are some risks to consider with a root canal. In rare cases, patients can experience nerve damage, allergic reactions, damage to surrounding teeth, or an incomplete removal of the infection. Our skilled dentists have years of experience performing root canals, and take every precaution to avoid complications.
The cost of a root canal will depend on several factors, including:
- The severity of the infection
- The location of the tooth
- Dental insurance coverage
- The need for additional procedures
