How Do Retainers Work?
After removing metal or ceramic braces or completing treatment with clear aligners, your teeth are in the ideal position. However, the braces or aligners are no longer there to keep the teeth straight. While braces straighten teeth, a dental retainer goes over the teeth to hold them in place. Here’s how:
Custom-Fit
Every retainer is custom-fit for each patient to help maintain treatment results. We take a scan or impression of your teeth to ensure we have the perfect fit for your smile.
Wearing Your Retainer
Once you have your retainer, your dentist will provide instructions on when to wear it and for how long. You will initially need to wear it for several weeks or months after orthodontic treatment to help your teeth settle in place. Then, you must wear it nightly to prevent your teeth from shifting.
Caring For Your Retainer
You will need to take care of your retainer to avoid damage or dental issues. Your dentist will likely recommend:
- Removing your retainer before eating
- Keeping the retainer in its case when not in use
- Avoiding having the retainer in extreme heat
- Clean your retainer as directed
- Practice good oral hygiene before inserting your retainer
